1. What is Legacy Heritage Fellowship?

Legacy Heritage Fellowship is a year-long program providing gifted and highly-motivated individuals interested in a career in public service at the executive level (i.e. law, international affairs, government, and non-governmental organizations) with the opportunity to work in such placements worldwide. It seeks to train and help create a global community of outstanding leaders and public servants, all of whom are passionate advocates for a sturdy and long-lasting peace in the Middle-East.

2. What does the Fellowship program entail?

The Fellowship is comprised of four key components:

Placements and Mentoring
Seminars
Professional and Educational Enrichment
Middle East Public Service Initiative

The placement will expose each Legacy Heritage Fellow to substantial levels of responsibility within the organization where he/she is placed. Each Fellow will be assigned an appropriate mentor to closely assist and guide the Fellow throughout the year. Complementing the guidance provided through the placement, Legacy Heritage personnel maintain an on-going relationship with each Fellow, offering guidance and assistance all year long.

Each Fellow is required to prepare for and participate in a number of academic and educational seminars during the year. Each Fellow will also have the opportunity to present his/her work and progress while providing feedback on their colleagues' work.

Above and beyond the skills and knowledge each Fellow gains from his/her placements, Legacy Heritage Fellowship will lead and provide for regular meetings, web-chats, e-newsletters, conference calls and emails, all geared to help further develop skills, deepen knowledge, engage and inspire. Included in this segment will be readings, educational material such as videos and websites, writing and speaking assignments, and presentations by the Fellows.

Legacy Heritage Fellowship is committed to the idea of giving back to the larger community. An essential element of the Fellowship is the participation in a community-based project, called the Middle East Public Service Initiative (MEPSI) initiated by the Fellow in consultation with Legacy Heritage Fellowship staff.

Subsequent to their Fellowship year, all Fellows, as part of their agreement with Legacy Heritage Fellowship, are expected to continue contributing to the larger community capacity through public speaking, writing, or training sessions at least twice during the year.

Also, after completion of their Fellowship year, each Fellow is asked to serve as a mentor for one of the incoming Fellows. Mentors provide guidance and advice on how to navigate through the Fellowship experience and help to create an active network of Fellows, past and present, who will continue to benefit from the Fellowship for years to come.

3. Who can apply for the Fellowship?

Citizens of the European Union, Israel and North America (U.S. and Canada) with MA, PhD or Law degrees and who are interested in a career in public service. We will also consider exceptional college graduates.

4. When does the Fellowship start? When does it end?

The Fellowship starts in September 2010 and ends at the end of August 2011.

5. Is this a paid fellowship?

Yes. All Fellows receive a stipend for their term of service. Details will depend on the country in which the Fellow is working and the Fellow’s educational credentials.

6. I am an American applicant. Can I be placed in another country?

No. Legacy Heritage Fellowship is committed to cultivating the next generation of local leadership in each continent. Therefore all Fellows will be working in the country in which they reside. Once selected, American Fellows will be placed in the US, Europeans in Europe, etc.

7. How do I apply?

You can download an application from our website. In the introduction to the application you will find information about the application process.

8. When is the deadline for submitting an application?

Applications, along with all supporting materials, must be postmarked by January, 4, 2010.

9. How many Fellows are selected?

Approximately 18-25 individuals are invited to become Legacy Heritage Fellows.

10. How does the decision process work?

Once the finalists have been selected from among the candidates, they will be invited for a phone or in-person interview. Such interviews will take place from mid-February to April. Those selected as Legacy Heritage Fellows for 2010-2011 will be notified by early May, 2010.

After candidates accept, they and Legacy Heritage Fellowship staff will discuss different placement possibilities, stipends and other details of the program including specific commitments expected from the Fellows during and following the Fellowship year. We will then, with the Fellow, schedule one or more appointments with the suggested placement organizations.
